Abstract. This chapter takes up Andrew Thacker’s suggestion that Woolf’s novel records a form of spatial history. Zink charts this history, moving from the highly gendered divisions of the late-Victorian home, symbolised by emblematic spaces such as the sickroom and the study, to new modes of living across the : Suzana Zink.   She herself notes in her late novel The Years (and even more directly in The Pargiters, the novel/essay draft of this work) that the frank discussion of women's bodies is not only taboo from a societal standpoint at the time of her writing but also difficult (it not impossible) from a creative one, as the necessary language has not yet been.
